MODERN

CLASSIC

My boards are rooted in two different fish templates which yield an array of variations. The “classic” fish template is an original outline by me. It is important to note this because it was not handed down, there is no direct line to the traditional fish, it is my interpretation and approximation of the qualities that might be important to my surfing from my research on this widely circulated design principle which was born from the Steve Lis kneeboard. In concert with this outline I will use a variety of Keel fins (always double foiled) with a straight/near straight toe in and upright, a subtle single concave tending to use downrails but may vary. The parameters for this are between 5’1”- 5’4” as I understand this design to require shortness.

The modern fish concept is the template that was drawn out from the initial “classic”. The idea here is to let the design evolve. While I would say they are both performance shortboards the modern is less specialized and doesn’t require the level of adaptation that the classic does. In my journey adaptation was the key to growth so that is how I arrive at these two templates as the groundwork for my board building. Fins can vary from Keel to quad sets. All my fins are glass on as I believe this to be much better than using fin boxes or plugs.
